As I suspected, word traveled fast, and within an hour before we finished off another pint, women of all ages stopped by to get a glimpse of a famous celebrity. Most fussed and giggled from afar, unable to get up the nerve to come and talk to him, but others strode right up to our table and began chatting with Grayson as if they were lifelong friends.

And much to my amazement, he took it all in stride.

Although I can’t completely relate to his level of stardom, I did have fans back in the day while I played in the GAA that wanted to stop to chat me up or have a beer with me. But the difference is that most were local folks—many I’d known all my life or knew through familial relations. And perhaps because of that, I never employed the same gracious demeanor that Grayson reserves for his fans.

It must be exhausting to live a life where you’re constantly being scrutinized or observed by others, or meant to feel like somehow you owed those fans a piece of you. And to never be able to go anywhere with complete anonymity? I can’t even imagine what that would do to a person. No wonder he registered at our B&B under his real name.

Things finally calmed after the third round of pints. Or it could be that I’d developed a good buzz and was much more relaxed and mellow than when we first arrived. Whatever the case, we finally have an uninterrupted moment to ourselves.

“Jaysus, how do you feckin’ deal with all that?” I ask, gesturing with a wave of my hand toward the room where most of the females have departed, leaving the hardcore pub goers to their peace, including Grayson.

We’d moved to the back corner in a quiet booth that Mary cleared off for us, eating complimentary appetizers and a bread she brought to the table, “compliments of the house.”

Grayson contemplates this for a moment, lifting his eyes to the ceiling as I stare at the smooth skin of his neck, the protrusion of his Adam’s apple that makes me salivate with need.

He sighs. “Fame is a weird thing. I craved it for so long when I first began in the industry. All I wanted was to be known for my acting roles and for fans to know who I was. It’s just like an addiction. The first jolt of that feeling is thrilling and gives you the best fucking high.”

And then he frowns. “But too much of something is never a good thing.”

“Aye,” I nod, taking another sip. “But you sure seem to handle it well.”

Grayson laughs wryly. “Oh, there have been times where I’ve lost it. Especially with the paparazzi. Those guys are vultures. L.A. is the worst. Being in London wasn’t as bad, though. And here…this is nothing. It’s why I wanted to get away from it all for a while. Had I returned to L.A., I don’t think I could’ve finished writing my screenplay without all the swirl of fame outside my door keeping me constantly unfocused.
